The College of Health Solutions (CHS) at Arizona State University (ASU) is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Scholar to join the Gait and Balance Dysfunction Laboratory. The position will be supervised by Drs. Daniel Peterson, Hyunglae Lee, and Edward Ofori and collaborate closely with faculty and partners across ASU Health, the College of Health Solutions. This is a 12-month appointment that may be renewed for subsequent one-year terms up to four years, contingent on continued satisfactory performance, the continued availability of funding and the needs of the program, and as long as you are within five years from receipt of the doctoral degree.
Our group focuses on balance and fall prevention in neurological groups such as people with Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. We study applied and basic/neurophysiological aspects of balance and gait rehabilitation, with special interest in reactive balance and how cognitive ability influences balance and posture. We use a number of approaches, including motion capture (motion capture, inertial sensors, EMG) and neuroimaging (fMRI & DTI), among others.
The ideal candidate will have interest in balance, postural instability and falls, and/or gait, as well as experience or interest in one of, but not necessarily all of the following domains:
· Neuroimaging Acquisition and Analysis (MRI or mobile brain imaging [e.g., EEG, fNIRS])
· Ability to collect multi-modal biomechanics data (motion capture, force-plates, EMG, etc.)
· Robotics, controls, and machine learning with application toward neurorehabilitation
The postdoctoral scholar will have the opportunity to work with an excellent, collaborative, multi-disciplinary team and contribute to multiple projects funded by NIH and Michael J Fox Foundation. This includes individuals across ASU with expertise in multimodal neuroimaging, robotics, AI and machine learning, and psychology. They will also have the opportunity to collaborate on future grant applications. The scholar will design data collection tools, collect data, plan and conduct analysis, prepare first-author, peer-reviewed publications, collaborate with other team members, help mentor undergraduate and graduate students and present their work at national and international conferences. Excellent writing skills, both for manuscript writing and proposal development are essential.
Essential functions
· Conduct research (data collection, analysis, interpretation, and manuscript preparation) to be published in high quality journals.
· Participate in professional activities such as attending conferences.
Required Qualifications
· Doctorate in movement/rehabilitation science, biomedically related engineering fields, motor control, or related field.
· Demonstrated interest in neurological conditions, neurorehabilitation, gait, balance and/or motor control.
· Demonstrated understanding of research design, statistical approaches and packages (e.g., R, SPSS, etc.).
· Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams.
· Demonstrated excellent writing skills, both for manuscript writing and proposal development.
Desired Qualifications
· Expertise in one or more of the following areas: Assessment and improvement of neurorehabilitation interventions; – Neuroimaging Acquisition and Analysis, including dMRI, fMRI, fNIRS, EEG, or other neural function modalities; or Robotics with application toward neurorehabilitation.
· Experience with robotics, perturbation systems, or control approaches relevant to neurorehabilitation.
· Advanced programming skills in MATLAB; experience in Python programming
· Evidence of the potential to develop an independent, high-impact program of translational neurorehabilitation research.
· Experience with wearable sensors, digital mobility outcomes, signal processing, or time-series analysis.
· Experience conducting human-subjects research and willingness to participate directly in participant recruitment, experimental testing, and multimodal data collection.
Applications and Inquiries
Applications will be reviewed beginning Dec. 1, 2026. Applications will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis for a reserve pool. Applications in the reserve pool may then be reviewed in the order in which they were received until the position is filled.
· A letter of interest including the name of the position for which you are applying, your qualifications and professional experience, and an example(s) of how your work has exemplified Arizona State University’s Charter and its values of Inclusive Excellence
· Curriculum vitae
· Copies of up to three publications
· Information for three professional references (their position, title, e-mail, phone number). References will not be contacted until the candidate progresses to the latter stages of the search process.
